Program: Remembering the 50's and 60's
Admission: $2.00
Join in the fun with your FOM friends for our final Sunday meeting, featuring an old fashioned ice cream social.
We’re going to celebrate the good ole days of the 50’s and 60’s by jitterbugging, twisting and slow dancing to the
tunes of the Beatles, the Platters, Elvis, Bobby Darrin, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis, Jr. and others. Maybe some of us
will remember how to do The Watusi, The Mashed Potato, The Boog-aloo or The Pony and could teach at least one of them to the others.
There will be Trivia games relating to the era and a costume contest. Although costumes are optional, it would be fun to put
together an outfit reminiscent of your era – hippie clothing, tennis shoes, white socks, pedal pushers (today’s capris are the same),
dungarees (also easy – just roll up your jeans) pony tails, slicked back duck tail hair styles, neckerchiefs, tight skirts, full skirts
with crinolines, etc. To look like Fonzie, all you guys need is a pair of jeans and a white tea shirt with sleeves rolled up holding a
fake cigarette pack. Invite your friends and let’s make this final Sunday meeting a most memorable event.
BE THERE OR BE SQUARE!

|
Topic: Fun, Games and a Dance Lesson
Speaker: (No speaker this month)
The FOM board has decided to implement a program change for the
3rd Sunday meetings. Presentations by guest speakers will continue
to take place, but only on a bimonthly basis. On alternate months,
upbeat activities will occur during the regularly scheduled meeting
times. Activity suggestions for future months (from all members)
will be greatly appreciated.
On Sunday, November 21st, an afternoon of music, games, card
playing and plain old fashioned fun will take place. Please bring
along any games or CDs that you wish to share with other
members. One of the featured games will be TABOO, which
is interesting, easy to play and brings lots of laughs.
Some very basic Hand Dance instructions will be offered by a
group member. For those not familiar with hand dancing, it
is also known as D.C. hand dancing or DC swing. It is characterized
by gliding footwork and continuous hand connection communication
between the partners, hence its name. This is very
similar to the jitterbug that many of us enjoyed during the 50s
and 60s before disco type dancing became popular.

Speaker: Leo Bretholz, Holocaust Survivor
Topic: Surviving the Holocaust
Our honored guest speaker, Leo Bretholz, will present his harrowing
tale of eluding capture and death as an Austrian Jew living in
Europe through the Holocaust. For nearly 50 years Mr. Bretholz
has traveled the Baltimore area, telling his story at schools,
synagogues, churches and other gatherings. He has written his
memoir Leap Into Darkness in collaboration with Michael
Olesker, and has appeared in the documentary film Survivors Among
Us. Mr. Bretholz, a charming individual, whose talks are full
of humor, engages the audience through questions throughout the
talk.
Leap Into Darkness is a gripping, action-packed account
of a young boys series of incredible escapes from the Nazis
Final Solution. In 1938, at his mothers insistence, Leo
Bretholz fled from Nazi occupied Austria and survived the Holocaust
by escaping seven times during his nearly seven year ordeal. He
leaped from trains, outran police and hid in attics, cellars -
anywhere that offered a few more seconds of safety. He swam the
River Sauer at the German-Luxembourg border. Later he climbed
the Alps on feet so battered that they froze to his socks, only
to be turned back at the Swiss border. He crawled out from under
barbed wire of a French holding camp and hid in a village in the
Pyrenees while gendarmes searched it. In the dark hours of one
morning he escaped from a train bound for Auschwitz. This is a
sweeping memoir of one Jewish boys survival and of the family
and the world he left behind.
Leap into Darkness is available at libraries and will
be available for sale and signing at this monthly meeting. FOM
members are strongly encouraged to invite their grandchildren
and children to this special presentation so that they will learn
from an actual Holocaust survivor the importance of remembering
and passing the message on to future generations. To learn more
about our guest speaker, you can access http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leo_Bretholz
